Marion Chevalier, 99, of Charlottesville, died peacefully on Saturday, January 29, 2011.

Marion was born on December 14, 1911, in Chicago, Illinois, where she grew up, attending Hyde Park High School and the Art Institute of Chicago.

She was preceded in death by her sister, Marjorie, and husband, Frank C. Chevalier, who after serving in the United States Army Signal Corps in World War II, moved his family to Europe, where they lived in Belgium, Italy, and Switzerland from 1946 until 1962. Marion and Frank, both avid ice skaters, enjoyed couples skating together.

She is survived by her two sons, both faculty at the University of Virginia, Robert L. Chevalier and his wife, Janis, and daughter, Juline; and Roger A. Chevalier, his wife, Meg, and sons, Chase and Max.

Throughout her life, Marion enjoyed painting and drawing portraits and landscapes, and visiting art museums during her travels across the world. She also greatly enjoyed classical music, and played the piano, especially the works of Bach, Beethoven and Debussy. After returning from Europe, she lived in Hinsdale, Illinois until moving to Westminster Canterbury of the Blue Ridge in Charlottesville, where she had resided for the past 11 years. She made many friends there, and was loved by residents and staff alike.

Marion appreciated the many kindnesses of the staff and residents at Westminster, and a memorial service was planned to be held there in the near future.

Memorial donations may be made to the Foundation Fighting Blindness www.blindness.org.
