Horatio was born at Wolf Creek in Pickens Co., SC. This area is now considered part of Pickens.

Horatio with his parents and siblings moved from SC in 1832 settled on Sweet Water Creek three miles west of Dawsonville, GA. He and Eliza Ann Manning married in 1842. He was among the first officers of the county, serving several terms as sheriff. He participated in moving Indians north during the Trail of Tears. He had five sons: John, James, Wm (Bud), Hugh, Robert J., and one dau., Sarah E.

Historical & Genealogical Society of Dawsonville, GA., Horatio & wife, Eliza Ann, John & wife, Martha, James & wife, Sarah, are all buried at Dawsonville. Hugh & wife Mary Rebecca, Robert J. & wife, Lydia,are all buried at McKee's Chapel, while Lillie is buried at Wesley Chapel, and Wm (Bud) & wife, Mary Jane are buried at Oxford, AR.
