LOCAL BOY DROWNS IN MISSISSIPPI RIVER

Earl Hill, aged 24, son of Mrs. Ada Hill of this place, was drowned last Thursday in the Mississippi River near Memphis. Young Hill was a member of the crew of the Government Steamer, C. B. Reede, and with other members of the crew was engaged in cooling the boat, when he slipped from the gangplank and fell into the water between the steamer and the barge. A swift current [took him] immediately under the boat, and also under another fleet of boats and barges. So efforts at rescue were of no avail. The body was recovered Saturday several miles downstream, and brought to De Valls Bluff for burial.

Funeral services were at Oaklawn Cemetery Sunday morning by Rev. J. T. Tucker. Besides his mother Mrs. Ada Hill, surviving are one sister, Mrs. Lucy Tallent, and one brother Garnett Hill.

[Note: His father was Bud Hill who was killed sometime earlier when he was blowing up tree stumps.]

- Obituary submitted here by Blytha (Dennis) Ellis, taken from family history notes by Mrs. Carrie (Humble) Scott, cousin of Earl.
