Civil War Medal of Honor Recipient. Born in Williamstown, Ohio, on December 13, 1845, he served as a Private in Company C, 82nd Ohio Infantry, Union Army. In actions against Confederate forces at Peach Tree Creek, Georgia, on July 20, 1864, Private Williams volunteered to go out and make a reconnaissance of the enemy positions. He went far beyond the safety of his own lines and then returned with important information. He also risked his life by going to the aid of a wounded comrade. For gallantry in the face of the enemy, he was awarded the Medal of Honor on June 19, 1894. He died on September 01, 1916, at age 70 in Colfax County, Nebraska.
