Remembering my grandmother, Gracie Elizabeth Davis Vickers on what would have been her 116th birthday. We were like "girlfriends"! She and I made so many memories. Trips out of town to visit family, slumber parties at her house, lots of laughter and a few tears. She saved me from many butt whippin's....as she was always my champion. I remember when she lived with us for a time, we slept together. On those hot, muggy Florida nights, with the windows open and in the stillness....we would take turns fanning each other with one of those old hand held church fans. OK....I'd get her to go first...and I fell asleep before she had her turn!!! Semantics! She taught me to embroidery, now I'd wished I'd asked her to teach me to crochet. She helped me learn to cook....(her daughter never paid too much attention to those lessons). When I had my first son, she gave him his first bath...and he thanked her by peeing in her face. I can hear her laughing now. At the end of her life, she didn't know who she was, much less anyone else. I'm thankful for all the memories I have of her. Her life wasn’t always easy, but I’m glad I had the ability to make her laugh. She could be, “mean as a snake”, but our relationship was special and for that I’m thankful. Because of the memories we made, it set the foundation for my relationship with my grandchildren. I always want to make memories. Thank you, Mam Maw, for all you gave me. I love you.

Information was provided in part by Gracie's granddaughter, Ramona Crews:
George Davis's first wife was Mary Elizabeth Raulerson. They were married in Osceola County, Florida on May 7, 1891. Together they had six children: Ethel Sarah Davis Collins, Bertha Lee Davis Crosby, Luther George Davis, Gracie (Grace) Elizabeth Davis Vickers and Lottie Davis Baisden. Mary died while giving birth sometime around 1907.

George then married his second wife, Blessie Padgett Thompson, on April 12, 1908 and had six more children: Ellen, Kenneth, Lucy, Gertrude, George and Ernestine.
