OBITUARY.
DR. AMBROSE LAWRENCE. DIED, at Boston, Mass., April 23, 1893, of apoplexy, AMBROSE LAWRENCE, D.D.S., in the seventy-seventh year of his age. Dr. Lawrence was born at Boscawen, N. H., May 2, 1816. He learned the trade of machinist at Peterboro, in that state, and subsequently went to Lowell, Mass., to take the position of overseer in the Suffolk mills. Remaining there but a short time, in 1837 he went to Georgia and studied dentistry with Dr. Smith, a relative of his wife.

Returning north in 1839, he opened dental rooms in Lowell, where he practiced for many years. During his residence here he took an active part in politics, having at different periods been elected to the common council, twice to the board of aldermen, to the school board, and was chosen mayor of the city in 1855, as the candidate of the American party. He was also prominently connected with the Masons and Odd Fellows.

About twenty years ago Dr. Lawrence removed to Boston, where he gave most of his attention to the manufacture of Lawrence's Amalgam, so familiar to all dentists. He received a professional degree from Harvard College [evidently an MD degree since he is listed in 1893 Polk dental directory as having such], and became lecturer in the Boston Dental College, in which he was at one time a professor. He was also a graduate of the Pennsylvania College of Dental Surgery, class of 1866, and belonged to several dental societies.

Dr. Lawrence was twice married, and leaves surviving him a widow and one son, Dr. George W. Lawrence, formerly a dentist of Lowell, Mass., but now of Chicago, Ill. His funeral took place at his late residence, in St. Botolph street, Boston, on April 26, and the remains were interred at Mt. Hope cemetery.

According to Wikipedia, Ambrose Lawrence was the 12th Mayor of Lowell, Massachusetts from January 1856 to January 1857.

As can be seen in his advertisement Ambrose was for a time in practice with his son Dr. George Washington Lawrence in Lowell. When Dr. Ambrose Lawrence removed to Boston in circa 1873, a new family name pops up in Lowell. His younger brother Samuel Lawrence (29 Jan 1823-16 Feb 1907) evidently took over his dental practice and was listed in dental directories until his death. No evidence of formal education has been located for his brother who may have been trained by preceptorship in Dr. Ambrose Lawrence's office.

At the time of his father Ambrose Lawrence's death in 1893, George Washington Lawrence, was living in Chicago.

According to primarily census and family tree records on ancestry.com, he married Emily Smith, 2 years his junior on 8 Jul 1838. Their son George Washington Lawrence was born in 1839. He also had two daughters, Isabella (abt 1843-) and Lilly (abt 1858-). His father was Alvarus Lawrence born 17 April 1796 in Ashby, MA, (died 1839) his mother was Eliza Farnsworth born 7 August 1797 probably in Dublin, NH (died 13 Mar 1862). He was either the oldest or second oldest of ten children.
