Civil War: Company L, 1st California Cavalry
George English enlisted as a private at San Jose, California, May 21, 1863, and was mustered into Captain James Corman’s Company L, 1st California Cavalry, June 12. Private English was posted to Tubac, Arizona Territory. Private English was reported missing in action following an attack by Apaches on the vedette station at the site of old Fort Buchanan February 17, 1865. At the time of the attack Private English was on a foraging detail hunting for wild game some 15 miles east of old Fort Buchanan in what is now Cochise County. His remains were never recovered.
