Wilham "William" was born in Prussia in Oct of 1826. Census records show that both of his parents were from Prussia. In 1851 William married Wilheminia "Minnie" Kuhlmann in Prussia. After 20 years of marriage the couple decided to immigrate to the US with their 5 children.

The family did not go alone. Williams older brother, Christian, William's sister-in-law, Eva, and a bevy of nieces and nephews accompanied them on the ship named the Italy.

William and Minnie arrived in NYC on 9 Dec 1872 with their children, Frederick "Fred", Charles "Chas", Gustav Adolph "Gus", Wilheminia "Minnie" and Johan "John". A sixth child, Harriett was born in the Iowa in 1884.

By March of 1874, both William and his brother and their families were living in Des Moines, Iowa. William and Minnie Hoffman were living at 109 First Street in Des Moinesin 1880. The 1880 census indicates that William was working as a laborer and Minnie was keeping house. Son, Gustav was also employed as a laborer. Son Charles, age 22, was too ill to work that year as he suffered from Rheumatoid Arthritis.

On 3 Aug 1880, William Hoffman was became a naturalized citizen. In 1900, Minnie and William were living at 421 First Street in Des Moines in a house they owned. Their 26 year old daughter, Harriet, was living with them at the time. William was 74 and Minnie was 70. The 1900 census shows that both Minne and William had learned to speak fluent English but they had not learned to read or write in English.

William died in 1902 leaving Minnie a widow at age 72. Five years later Wilimina passed away. The two of them were buried in Woodland Cemetery in Des Moines.
