Christian Birky, son of Joseph and Catherine (Bender) Birky, was born March 24, 1871; passed away at his home in Iowa City, Iowa, Sept. 4, 1947; aged 76 y. 5 m. 11 d. Death was caused by a heart attack. In 1895 he was married to Magdalena Kauffman. They lived on a farm for several years; then they moved to Williamsburg, from there to Cedar Rapids, and then to Iowa City. Surviving are his widow, 4 daughters (Mrs. Art Fosbeck, Ravenna, Ohio; Mrs. Catherine Purk, Cedar Rapids; Mrs. Edwin Bender, Kalona, Iowa; and Mrs. George Williams, of Iowa City), 5 sons (Harry, Mount Vernon, Iowa; Eli, of Cedar Rapids; Walter, Davenport, Iowa; Francis, Solon, Iowa; and William, Atkins, Iowa), 2 sisters (Mrs. Lena Erb and Mrs. Andrew Eash, both of Wellman, Iowa), one brother (Joseph, also of Wellman), 21 grandchildren, 2 great-grandchildren, and many other relatives and friends. One infant son, one brother (Dan), and 2 grandchildren predeaceased him. On Feb. 9, 1941 he united with the Mennonite Church in Iowa City. Funeral services were held Sept. 6 at the church, with D. J. Fisher, J. Y. Swartzendruber, and Norman Hobbs in charge. Interment was made in the Lower Deer Creek Cemetery, near Wellman.
