Tragedy At Rail Crossing In Monon. Grim Afterhmath Of Birthday Party Early Sunday
A Monon train spreading death at State Road 43 crossing in Monon at 1:55 o'clock Sunday morning snuffed out four young lives as a grim climax to a birthday party at the home of Mr. and Mrs. William D. Blake of north of Remington Saturday night.
Numbered among the dead is Mrs. Sarah Simons Hensler, 20, of near Remington, wife of Glen Hensler and daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Simons and 1936 graduate of Rensselar high school.
The other dead:
Mrs. William D. Blake, 22, of Remington.
Hubert Hendershot, 21, of Wolcott.
Eugene Kercher, 21, of Wolcott.
Mr. Kercher was a nephew of Mrs. Norman Bowman of Rensselaer.
Attended Pary
The four young people, with the two girl friends of the dead youths and Mr. Hensler and Mr. Blake had observed the birthday anniversary of one of their number at the Blake home two miles north of Remington on State Road 53 Saturday evening.
Hendershot, a farm hand at the Blake place, and Kercher, who was employed in Chicago and who had gone to the home of his parents near Wolcott to spend Mothers' Day, had taken their girl friends to their respectivce homes following the party, after which they returned to the Blake home, where Kercher was to be an overnight guest of Mr. Hendershot. Shortly after their return, Mrs. Hensler said: "Let's all take a ride." Mr. Blake and Mr. Hensler stated they did not care to go riding, but the others said they would go. The ill-fated party left in Mr. Blake's 1935 Doge and had proceeded as far as monon where their car was stuck by the crack Monon flyer which passes through here aty 1:36 a.m.
The train struck the automobille broadside and carried it about 300 feet where the car was dashed against a railroad water tower. The tower's supporting columns were knocked away and it fell to the ground.
The train is scheduled to stop at Monon, at 1:57 a.m., and was slowing down when the accident occurred. State Road 43 crosses the tracks only about 600 feet north of the depot. The train was delayed two hours by the accident.
The crossing is not marked with flasher signals. There is a watchman on duty at the crossing during the day but none at night.
The car was literally torn to pieces, to finally be smashed against the water tower as though it were no more than an eggshell. The broken bodies were strewn along the right-of-way.
