Mr. Hughes was an Airline Mechanic for American Airlines in Tulsa, retiring in 1983 after working for 31 years, with the last 10 years worked as a Non-Destructive Test Inspector. He graduated from Sperry High School and also served our country in the U.S. Army, 3rd Division at Ft. Benning, GA. He was a member of First Christian Church in Sapulpa. He has been a part of the community for 63 years. Disabled by a stroke in 1999 and a resident of Ranch Terrace Nursing Home since August 2002. Up until his sickness, Les enjoyed and was proud of serving in different positions. He served as City Commissioner of Sapulpa, Sapulpa Metropolitan Area Planning Commissioner, President of Sapulpa Historical Society, President of Sapulpa Rural Water Company, served several years as Regional Director in Northeastern Oklahoma for the Oklahoma Rural Water Association and was honored by them as the 1998 "Man of the Year" of which he was very proud, served on Creek Country Board of Adjustment. He also was a 32 Degree Mason. Les always said, "He enjoyed serving his City and Community to help make it a more beautiful place to live and make sure it's history was preserved and remembered." He was preceded in death by his parents, Marion and Ocye (McManess) Hughes; and one brother, Victor Hughes.
