Heywood Stanley Jr., 81, died Jan. 6, 2010, at Oceanside Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation in Hampton.

He was born on August 16, 1928 in Exeter, to Raymond H. Stanley Sr. and Eldora (Eno) Stanley.

A native and lifelong resident of Exeter, he graduated from Exeter High School in 1946 and served his country in the U.S. Navy from 1948- 1950.

In a career as a firefighter that spanned more than 30 years, he retired as chief of the Exeter Fire Department in 1988.

He also worked for many years in the area doing wallpapering and painting. In his younger years, he played trumpet in the Dick Rocks Band and also enjoyed playing softball. A devoted family man and avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed many activities including hunting, fishing, and camping.

IN HIS LIFE: He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Lucille (Varrill) Stanley of Exeter; two sons, Jon and wife Gale Stanley of Sandown, and David and wife Tina Stanley of Omaha, Neb.; his daughter Dena Stanley of Rochester; four grandchildren, Cory, Johanna, Jonelle, and Carl; and two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his son Tim Stanley who died in 2001, and his brother Alfred Stanley who died in 2009.

SERVICES: Calling hours will be 5 to 8 p.m. today at the Brewitt Funeral Home, 14 Pine St., Exeter. Funeral Services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Burial with military honors will follow in the Exeter Cemetery.
