Bio

My family was in the stone/quarry/monument business in one form or another for at least 250 years in both Old and New England, and I grew up in and around cemeteries. I have always been fascinated by the designs, lettering styles and epitaphs on old gravestones.

If someone is having difficulty reading old, well-weathered stones, please feel free to contact me and I will send you my regular email. There are several little known non-destructive methods for reading inscriptions (taking rubbings, detergent/bleach cleaning, most chemicals (except D2) and using shaving cream are all destructive) on old marble, sandstone and shale. Just tell me about the stone and condition or send me an email with a picture and I'll try to help you read the inscription.

To address current copyright laws, I grant unrestricted permission for the private use and copying of any pictures I take and add to this site, except publication for profit. If you copy/use and want to give me credit for the original picture, I would appreciate it, but I won't lose any sleep over it if you do not.
