Among the tombs in the crypt of Old St. Patrick's is one bearing the inscription "Ellen Fitzgerald's Family Vault" and the year "1852". The implication is that Ellen was a widowed matriarch of a prosperous family--one which had the means to consign their remains to the crypt rather than the churchyard. According to the custodian at Old St. Patrick's, the vault contains the remains of collateral ancestors of President John Fitzgerald Kennedy, whose maternal great-great grandparents were Ellen (nee Wilmouth) Fitzgerald (1797-1875) & Edmund Fitzgerald (1798-1883). Their son Thomas Fitzgerald (1835-1885) was the father of Mayor "Honey Fitz" of Boston, the President's famous grandfather. In 1999 Old St. Patrick's was the site chosen for JFK, Jr.'s memorial service, a decision which may reflect his ancestral connection to this historic church.
