American Revolutionary War soldier, killed at the Battle of Springfield, NJ, in June 1780.
The 19-year-old son of Phebe(nee Hetfield) and the distinguished early American patriot Robert Ogden, Moses died at nearby "Connecticut Farms" (known today as the town of Union, NJ.) Despite his youth, the teenaged patriot apparently proved to be both a leader on the field and courageous in combat:

"This lovely youth
Adorned with Truth
A brave Commander Shone...".

New Jersey has been called the "Cockpit of the American Revolution", and the epitaph and the military images on Moses Ogden's gravestone--swords incised on either side of the inscription, and crossed in bas relief above the soul effigy--suggest that his bereft family took solemn pride in his conduct and devotion to the cause of liberty. The brown sandstone stele marking his grave was sculpted in the Elizabethtown workshop of master carver Ebenezer Price. GRAVESTONE PHOTO by Nikita Barlow, 1991.
