Origin of surname: Haire

I was curious about this last name which is on my maternal side of the tree, my great great grandmother having married into the Haire family.

Apparently its origin is Norman-French and early medieval English. It’s one of many variations of Ayer which denotes a male who is known to be heir to title or fortune, as we use the word “heir” today. It derives from Middle English “eir, eyr”, heir being from Old French ‘eir, heir’ from Latin “heres, heir.

One source says it was first found in Ayrshire, a former county in SW Scotland.
