He, and his crew members were returning to base after a bombing raid over Stuttgart, Germany, when the pilot lost control of their Avro Lancaster Bomber. The plane spun into the ground at Shillington, Bedfordshire, 4 miles north-west of Hitchin, Hertfordshire. There would normally be a crew of seven but unfortunately l do not know if any of them survived.
Sergeant Batchelor died aged 21.
