The adopted son of Oliver and Florence A. Rees of Rugby, Warwickshire, his mother's surname, at the time of his birth, was Farley.

Sergeant Batchelor was based at RAF Witchford near Ely, in Cambridgeshire. He, and his crew members were returning to base after a bombing raid over Stuttgart, Germany, when the pilot lost control of their Avro Lancaster Bomber. The plane spun into the ground at Shillington, Bedfordshire, 4 miles north-west of Hitchin, Hertfordshire. There would normally be a crew of seven but unfortunately l do not know if any of them survived.

Sergeant Batchelor died aged 21.
