Served in the Wee Nee Riflemen, 3rd Regiment (Pee Dee Legion) as 2nd Sergeant, and the 25th Regiment, Company C. During the Battle of Ft. Sumter, April 12, 1861 the Confederate Flag was shot down. Samuel Montgomery and David McClary Duke volunteered and replaced it. David served as Ordinary of the Court of Common Pleas for Williamsburg County until the reconstruction in 1868.
