Mr. John Blackwell Duke died Monday noon at his residence on Emmett street, after a long and painful illness. Mr, Duke was born at Kingstree, S.C., February 10, 1856. He was an engineer on the Atlantic Coast Line for over twenty years. He, with his family, came to Palatka about thirteen years ago. He had been a member of the Baptist Church for many years. Being of a retiring nature, he was slow to make friends, but to those whom he liked he was steadfast and true. For the past year he has been a great sufferer, but he bore his affliction with the patient fortitude of a Christian.
He is survived by his wife, one daughter, Mrs. L. D. Edge, of Groveland, and his son, Clyde, also three brothers, S. V. Duke, of Gainesville, D. F. Duke, of Dunnellon, and Thomas Duke, of South Carolina.
Funeral services were held at his last residence Tuesday morning, conducted by Rev. Mr. Grady. His remains were sent to Jacksonville and interred in Evergreen Cemetery. Services were conducted at the grave by Rev. Mr. Gaines.
To the grief-stricken family the sympathy of many friends is extended.
