Civil War Union Army Surgeon. A 1861 graduate of the University of Pennsylvania Medical School, he offered his services when the Civil War began, and he was commissioned as an Assistant Surgeon, United States Regular Army on July 30, 1862. He served until his resignation on December 8, 1865, and he was brevetted Major, US Regular Army on March 13, 1865 for "faithful and meritorious services during the war".
After the war he became a Professor at his Alma Mater, and was one of the Nation's foremost nose and throat specialists.
