She was a resident of Washington, D.C., for more than 60 years. The daughter of he late Mr. & Mrs. F. Clarke Holmes, Sr. of Hernando, MS, she graduated from the University of Mississippi in Oxford, where she was "Miss Ole Miss", and president of the Chi Omega Sorority.

After college, she worked for the Federal Housing Administration in Washington, D.C., and was active in the Daughters of the American Revolution, serving as Regent of the Emily Nelson Chapter, D.C. .A.R. She was also a member of the State Officer's Club.

She was an active parent volunteer for the National Cathedral School for Girls in Washington; the Girl Scouts of America, and a member of the All Saints Episcopal Church in Chevy Chase, MD.

Mrs. Newton was preceded in death by her husband, James Yates Newton, of the former Evening Star newspaper of Washington, D.C. He died on December 16, 1964.

She is survived by daughters, Virginia Willoughby Newton of California & Frances Newton Harwood of Maryland; grandchildren, Jay Harwood of Texas, Elizabeth Harwood of Annapolis, MD, Ginny Franklin of California, & Carrie Wilson of Illinois; great-grandchildren, Adam & Sydney Harwood and Thomas & Tristan Wilson.

Memorial Services were conducted at the St. Luke Episcopal Church, Calistoga, CA. Graveside services and interment, next to her husband, followed on Sunday, December 27, 2009.
