Actor. Born in Lynn, Massachusetts, he was fondly remembered for the role as Commissioner Gordon on the original "Batman" TV series. His show business career began when he took a job as a shirt model in magazine ads, became interested in acting and joined a stock company. He made his first film role in D.W. Griffith's "The White Rose" (1918). After performing in several more Griffith films, he was signed by Paramount in the late 1920s and soon became one of the studio's most popular leading men. A veteran of over 125 films, his credits include "Beau Geste" (1926), "Tarzan the Ape Man" (1932), "When Strangers Marry" (1944), "The Devil's Hand" (1962) and "Which Way to the Front?" (1970). His many other television credits included "77 Sunset Strip", "Perry Mason", "Bachelor Father", "The Outer Limits" and "Mr. Ed". He died from complications of asthma at age 85 in Escondido, California.
