William Worthington McHenry was born 16 January 1874 in Oxford, Chester County, Pennsylvania to Rachel Elizabeth Bradway and William Franklin McHenry. As a young man he changed his name to Ward Worthington MacHenry and he was the first born son with six older sisters and one younger brother.

He graduated Lincoln University, delivering the Latin Salutatory during the 1894 ceremony. Continued his education at Princeton Theology Seminary graduating that institution May 1897. He began his lifetime of practicing his faith by becoming pastor of the First Presbyterian Church, Jasper, Minnesota between 1898-1899. Between 1900-1902 he was pastor of the First Presbyterian Church, Northport, Washington where he met Pearl Hugunin, the church organist who became his bride; they moved to Harrington, Washington where their first child, Gladys was born. From there he was pastor at Calvary Presbyterian Church, Enumclaw, Washington 1905-1906; First Presbyterian Church, Ashland, Oregon, where their second child, Esther was born; Baker, Oregon between 1911-1916 where children Ward and Miriam were born than paster of Mt. Tabor Presbyterian Church in Portland, Oregon where son Paul was born. With five growing children Ward and Pearl remained in Seattle, Washington and Woodland Park Presbyterian Church to be followed by Centralia Church, 1931-1937 where Pearl died in 1935, much too young. Ward finished his career caring for the people of Ilwaco and Long Beach, Washington churches until his death in 1955.
He was awarded his Doctor of Divinity from Whitworth College, Spokane, Washington 13 June 1955.
