John Jeffrey

John Jeffrey, a highly respected resident of Island Creek township, died Wednesday, February 21st. He was born in Brooke County, W. Va., October 8, 1812, and was in his eighty-second year. At an early age his father died, leaving him almost the sole support of a widowed mother and seven children, and as a consequence having to go to work at so early an age, he was deprived of the opportunities of any but a limited education, although possessed of a great desire for knowledge, but by hard study he acquired a fair education. By trade he was a tinner. He was in every way a self-made man. He removed early in life to Pennsylvania and was married November 19th, 1834, to Jane Weaver of Canonsburg. He served there as a Justice of Peace for ten years, and his love for peace made it possible for all difficulties to be settled without the aid of law. He was a man of remarkable vigor and was possessed of a strong physique which continued until his last illness. He was sick but five days with pleuro-pneumonia. He was possessed of a genial disposition which caused him to be generally liked and his bright spirit never waned with advanced years. He was intensely honest and the very soul of integrity which gained him the respect of all. As a father he was kind an affectionate but always remarkably firm. He was a member of the U. P. Church, of Mount Hope, Pa., but since his removal here in 1876, had not united with the church, though his daily walk and conversation was that of a true Christian. He was extremely radical in his views on temperance. A Sabbath day's duty with him was the quiet reading of a number of chapters in the Bible. His aged wife and the following children survive: Mrs. Charles McCullough of Steubenville; Mrs. Smith of Pennsylvania; Mrs. Rogers of West Virginia; Mrs. Robert Foulk of Knox township; Mrs. Edwin Mills of Wellsville; John at home, and S.G. of Albany, N.Y. He was buried at Knoxville cemetery on Saturday, February 24th. The pall bearers were John Williamson, J. L. Cable, David Warren, John Grimm, Alf Phillips and J.Syimmons.
