Son of Robert Henry and Martha Eugenia Atkinson Drew, husband of Magdalene Sawyer.

MULLINS - Mr. Eugene Drew, 87, died Sunday, August 8, 2010 at Marion Regional Hospital After an extended illness.

Mr. Drew was born August 8, 1923 in Marion County, a son of the late Robert Henry "Bob" Drew and the late Eugenia "Genia" Atkinson Drew. He retired from the S.C. Forestry Commission after 35 years, serving 17 years as Marion County Forest Ranger. After retiring, Mr. Drew served for several years on the Marion Country Forestry Board. Mr. Drew had extended farming interest and was a cattle farmer until his health failed. He was a US Marine Corps veteran, having served in World War II. Mr. Drew was a member of the Marion Camp of Gideons and the Farm Bureau. He helped with the organization of the Marco Rural Water Company in 1972 and served on the Board of Directors until October 1999.

Mr. Drew was a member of Marion Baptist Church, where he was a member of the Judge Lide Sunday School Class. He was ordained as Deacon in 1946 and served actively for many years. Until his health failed, he served with the deacon family ministry. Mr. Drew helped with the construction of several church buildings in the area. While serving on the Missions Committee of Marion Baptist Church, he served as the first Sunday School Director for the Pee Dee Baptist Church when it was reorganized in 1990. Mr. Drew has been active in denominational (Baptist) work on the church and associational level. He served as Associational Chairman of the Produce Gathering Committee for Connie Maxwell Children's Home in Greenwood, S.C. for 37 years. (1946-1983) The Sixtieth (1983) Marion Baptist Associational Annual was dedicated in his honor.

Surviving Mr. Drew are two daughters, Cynthia (Ray) Faulk of Mullins and Teresa (Wayne) Emory Edwards of Burnsville, N.C.; and 5 grandchildren.

Mr. Drew was predeceased by, his wife of 62 years, Magdalene Sawyer Drew; five brothers, Ed Drew, Henry Drew, Roy Drew, Woodrow Drew and Ernest Drew; two foster sisters, Mrs. Archie (Kate) Gasque and Mrs. Harvey (Lillian) Sawyer; and a grandson, Dylan Edwards.

Funeral services will be held at 4:00 p.m. Wednesday, August 11 at Marion Baptist Church. Burial will follow in Devotion Gardens Cemetery, directed by Cox-Collins Funeral Home.
