115 Squadron's Avro Lancaster I (#HK595) aircraft took off during the day-time from RAF Witchford, with an aircrew of nine [a higher than usual number of crew for a Lancaster: but a second pilot and a third air gunner had been included]. The flight was for an air operation over the oil plant in Dortmund, Germany. Tragically HK595 collided over Germany in mid-air with 115 Squadron's Lancaster (#NN706): all the aircrew of both aircraft lost their lives.

The airmen of Lancaster HK595 who perished in this incident were-

RAAF Pilot Officer Felix Milton BURROWS,

RAFVR Squadron Leader Hugh Wilfred CASTLE,

RAFVR Flight Sergeant Bernard COLLINSON,

RCAF Pilot Officer Gordon Forbes DAWSON,

RAFVR Flight Sergeant Arthur Horace GRIBBLE,

RAFVR Flying Officer Peter Derek MULLETT,

RAAF Pilot Officer Robert John O'SULLIVAN,

RAFVR Sergeant Graham Mortimer SAMPSON and

RAAF Flight Sergeant Ronald Stuart STICKLAND .

[See Sergeant Arthur Douglas Ward GILLIBRAND for the names of the nine airmen of Lancaster NN706 who also perished.]
