Rufus J. Carr Killed
Load of Lumber Fell on Him and Body lay in the Road All Night.

A distressing accident occurred Wednesday night on the county road near the residence of B. B. Hunt, about eight miles from the city, which resulted in the death of Rufus J. Carr, one of the best known citizens of the county.
Mr. Carr was in Bluefield on Wednesday afternoon and left here about five o'clock. He was driving a wagon heavily loaded with lumber.
Thursday morning when daylight came his wife who had become uneasy about him sent messengers out to find him. At a sharp and dangerous turn in the road about one mile from home he was found. The wagon had overturned and Mr. Carr was caught under the lumber and killed. The accident happened probably about 9 or 10 o'clock but was not discovered until next morning. The horses had stopped where the accident occured and after getting on their feet had remained in the road where the wagon turned over.
Mr. Carr was a son of the late John T. Carr, and a nephew of Robt. S. Carr and a brother of Mrs. T. L. Buchanan and Mrs. Phil Buchanan of this city. He was one of the most progressive and prosperous farmers of Mercer county.
He was thirty-eight years of age and leaves a wife who is a sister of John and James Bailey of Beaver Pond.
