DEATH OF MRS. S. S. MARTIN
Old time friends in Chariton will regret to learn of the passing away of Mrs. S. S. Martin, which occurred at the hospital in Wichita, Kansas, on August 15, 1923, at the age of 86 years and 5 months, after an extended illness with the infirmities due to old age.
The remains were brought to Chariton on Saturday afternoon and laid to rest in the Chariton cemetery, brief services being conducted at the grave by Rev. J. I. Dool, pastor of the First Presbyterian church, and members of the Presbyterian choir sang a few appropriate hymns. The floral tributes were profuse and beautiful, tender messages of love and sympathy.
Adaline Higley was born in Meigs county, Ohio, on March 10, 1837. At the age of about sixteen years she came with her parents to Iowa and located in Clarke county, where she was married on April 12, 1857 to Mr. Shadrack S. Martin. To them four children were born, one of whom, Finley, passed away in Denver, Colo., in 1904, after he had grown to manhood.
Those surviving are Mrs. Kate Stewart, of Wichita, Kansas; Miss Bertha Martin, of Cedar Falls, Iowa; and George Martin, of Kansas City, Mo. The husband and father passed away many years ago.
About 1867 the family came to Chariton where they resided for many years. After the death of her husband Mrs. Martin went to Kansas City, where she lived for a time.. She also spent several years in Cedar Falls with her daughter, Bertha, but when her health began to fail she went to Wichita to the home of her daughter, Mrs. James Stewart, where her declining years were spent.
She had been a member of the Presbyterian church from early girlhood and had lived a faithful Christian life, full of kind and noble deeds. She possessed many lovable characteristics, and had a large circle of warm friends.
Besides the two daughters and son mentioned above, she is survived by five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren, and to all these sorrowing ones the deep sympathy of this community will be extended.
