Wells was rendered unconscious by the blow, with cuts and bruises about the head, his condition being considered extremely serious from the first owing to his advanced age. He did not regain consciousness during the time he was in the hospital.
Though the name of the motorist who struck him was not learned, he was not held responsible by members of the Wells family, as witnesses said he almost stopped in an attempt to avoid hitting Wells, who was trying to dodge a truck when he ran into the path of the pleasure machine.
Wells was the father of Harvey Wells, the grocer at Ginghamsburg, and was returning to his home from a visit to the son's store across the Dixie Highway when the accident occurred. Coroner E. E. Kimmel was called to the hospital Saturday morning to make an examination of the dead man before his removal.
