Aged 27, Jacob was a farmer, and lived with his wife, and two daughters in Lower Fork, Burke. The 1880 census record indicates that both of Jacob's parents were born in N.C.
Jacob and his first wife Lemmie had at least two children.
The 1880 Burke Census shows Jacob, aged 27, living with wife Catherine, aged 25. Their neighbor was Jacob Lail Sr. (Jacob's father).
Sept 30, 1883, Jacob married Catherine Vanhorn in Burke County
The 1910 Lower Fork, Burke Census record shows that Jacob was now 57 years old, had been married to his second wife for 25 years, that he was a farmer on a general farm, and that he owned his farm freely. His father is recorded as being born in Tennessee (certainly a mistake), and his mother in North Carolina.
In 1920 Jacob's age is given as 68, and he lives with wife Catherine, daughters Deedie and Addie, and sons James and Ed.
