Father: William M. Cope Sr. 1809-1860
Mother: Lydia (Wilder) Cope 1808-1860

Woodson Cope, a man of great honor and resilience, born into a world filled with turmoil, he carried his father's name and a spirit that would shape the course of his life.

As the winds of war swept through our nation, Woodson bravely answered the call to serve in the Civil War, donning the Union Army uniform with pride. Through hardship and sacrifice, he emerged as a symbol of courage, mustering out of service on December 30, 1863, leaving behind a legacy of bravery and devotion to his country.

Yet, amidst the aftermath of conflict, he found a new battle to face - that of love and loss. In the aftermath of war's end, he found solace in the arms of Rachel Elizabeth DeBord, and together, they built a family filled with love and warmth. Six children graced their home, a testament to their enduring bond and the strength of their union –

Parlee (Cope) Greene b 1867
James Harrison Cope b 1870
Abijah Christopher Cope b 1872
Newton Anderson Cope b 1876
Orlena Jane (Cope) Coffey b 1877
George Washington Cope b 1880

In 1906, fate dealt a cruel hand, as Rachel's life was cut short, leaving Woodson a widower. In the depths of sorrow, destiny intervened, and he found love again with Sarah "Sallie" Branson Kingsolver. At the age of 65, he took her as his bride, embracing not only her, but also her four children, Laura, Elsie, Pryor, and Harvey, as his own.

Woodson's heart knew no bounds, as he wholeheartedly welcomed these children into his life, giving them his name and his love. His act of compassion and selflessness touched the lives of those children, forever changing their destinies.

As the years rolled by, Woodson lived a life of dedication, love, and service to his family. He faced life's trials with courage, and his wise counsel and tender care left an indelible mark on each member of his family.

On December 9, 1922, the world lost a remarkable soul as Woodson Cope departed from this earthly plane. But his legacy lives on through the countless lives he touched, the stories he shared, and the love he bestowed upon all who knew him.

Today, as we bid farewell to this honorable veteran, let us remember the strength of his character, the love in his heart, and the lasting impact he made. May his memory be eternally cherished and may his soul find peace as he rests beside his loved ones in Grainger, Tennessee.
