7/15/1922 - 5/12/2010

Mildred "Mimi" Barnes 1922 - 2010 Mildred "Mimi" Barnes died on May 12, 2010 in triumph to a life lived with purpose, love and grace. We will celebrate her legacy at the place of her birth in Whitesburg Georgia on Thursday May 27th, 1:00 PM at the Whitesburg Baptist Church. A graveside farewell and reception will follow at Saint Paul's Church. Mother follows Luke, her husband of 48 years who died October 27, 1992. She was born July 15, 1922 as the fourth of five children to John Hamilton and Dora Lee Morris. She follows her three sisters – Eleanor, Carlynn and Lorraine – and is survived by "one fine boy", Richard Morris of Newnan. She is mother to five – Karen, Jane, Mark, Richard and Jenny; grandmother to ten; and great grandmother to seven. She provided a steady, positive influence throughout her life, and remains mentor to all. Mother loved and served her Savior Jesus Christ as a deacon, Sunday school teacher and dedicated member of Wieuca Road Baptist church for 40 years. She found solace, inspiration and guidance in His word that she brought to life every day and to those around her. Her wit was sharp but her shoulder was soft. She was tolerant and inclusive. She paid as she went. Her love of music ranged from "Amazing Grace" and Fiddler on the Roof to John Philip Sousa, Johnny Cash and Arlo Guthrie. Her travels took her around the globe and to 18 States. Her visits to the Grand Canyon and Yellowstone National Park – in the company of her daughters – were her favorites. Mother was a golfer. She claimed two holes-in-one over her career and was proud to have played the Old Course in St Andrews and Augusta National where she sank an improbable putt which our father said "went through 3 time zones"! She was a careful student of history and politics which lead to years of volunteer service at The Carter Center. She collected lighthouses and cheered for the Braves. Bird watching and gardening were lifelong hobbies, and she never saw a sunrise she didn't admire. We will miss all that she was yet Mimi Barnes will always be everything any of us could have asked for as a Mother and a friend.
