The son of Joseph & Maria (Glassletter) Abendschoen, in 1860 he was a shoemaker presumably living in Baltimore, Maryland. He stood 5' 6" tall and had dark hair and dark eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted and mustered in Baltimore February 15, 1864, as a private with Co. C, 7th Maryland Infantry. On May 8, 1864, he transferred to Co. H, 1st Maryland Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company July 2, 1865, in Washington DC.

He married Philomena "Mina" Hoffman July 29, 1867, in Baltimore and fathered Josephine (b. @1868), William (b. @1870), Annie E. (b. 01/22/71 - married Charles H. Noel), Mamie Mary (b. 01/30/73), John R. (b. 03/24/78), and Rudolph A. (b. 09/14/88, d. 04/05/94).
