Mrs. Lipford was born in Danville on Sept. 8, 1923, a daughter of the late William Henry Ragsdale Sr. and the late Olive May Anderson Ragsdale. She had lived most of her life in the Westover Hills community of Danville and she had retired from Dan River Mills, where she had worked in the No. 8 Inspection Department as an inspector. She was a member of Vandola Baptist Church and she enjoyed traveling on several bus trips and caring for her grandchildren.
She was married to Julian Emerson Lipford, who died Nov. 3, 1979. In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by a granddaughter, Angela B. Slaughter; and two brothers, Gaston Ragsdale and William Henry Ragsdale Jr.
Survivors include her son, Kenneth E. Lipford and wife, Sheron, of the residence; two grandchildren, K. Scott Lipford and wife, Cayce, Scott Budd and wife, Beth; a grandson-in-law, Tony Slaughter; and seven great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 11, 2010, at Danville Memorial Gardens, with Dr. Scott Bortz and the Rev. Gerald Reeves officiating. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Monday, May 10, 2010, at the Wrenn-Yeatts, Westover Chapel and at other times they will be at the residence. Also, the family suggests that memorials be made to the Danville Life Saving Crew, 202 Christopher Lane, Danville, VA 24541.
