GERALD ADKINS - ERWIN
Gerald Adkins, age 84, of 114 Division St., Erwin, died Tuesday, March 23, 2010, at Johnson City Medical Center.

Mr. Adkins was a native of Yancey County, N.C., but had lived in Unicoi County since 1948. He was a son of the late Burnie and Lyda Adkins.

He had worked as a lumber grader with Vestel Lumber Co. for several years and was owner and operator of the former Adkins Drive-In Restaurant.

Mr. Adkins was a World War II U.S. Army veteran, having served in Central Europe.

He was a Freewill Baptist. He enjoyed hunting and fishing over the years and was a fan of NASCAR.

Other than his parents, he was preceded in death by a grandson, Michael Gerald Shelton; a brother, Burnie Adkins Jr.; a brother-in-law, Ward Wilson; a sister-in-law, Lorene Adkins; and sons-in-law, Terry Hensley and Jack Willis.

Funeral services for Mr. Adkins were held at 8 p.m. Thursday, March 25, from the Robert Ledford Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Les Honeycutt officiated. Music was provided by Inez Chandler. Nephews served as pallbearers.

Committal services were held at 11 a.m. Friday, March 26, at Evergreen Cemetery. Military honors were rendered.

Robert Ledford Funeral Home was in charge.
