MARS HILL: James Talmadge Ledford, 84, of 1089 Old Mars Hill Hwy. passed away Sunday, April 18, 2010 at Madison Manor Nursing Center. He was a native and lifelong resident of Madison County, the son of the late Holden and Mada Chambers Ledford. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Louise Marshbanks, brothers; Roy P. Ledford and Harry Ledford. James joined the Navy in the summer of 1943, in Detroit, MI., attended Navy Boot Camp at Great lakes, IL. attended Navy Gunnery School at Gulf Port, MS, and participated at sea in a number of WWII Pacific battles: New Guinea, Saipan, Philippines, Iwo Jima, Okinawa. He served on ships such as the USS Mansfield, USS Darby, USS Bowles, USS Piocchio, and USS Shangri La, served at sea through much of the early years of the Cold War. He retired as a Chief Petty Officer in the summer of 1963, after 20 years of service. James started a paint store which expanded into the automotive business for 44 years.
Surviving are his wife Nina Balding Ledford who he married in 1963, daughter, Laura Schmid and husband, Claude of Medford, NJ, their sons; James Colton Schmid and Kyle Riniker Schmid, two sons; John Ledford and wife Lemona of Barnardsville and Mike Ledford and wife Cristi of Mars Hill, and their daughter Sarah Morgan.
The funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM Wednesday, April 21, 2010 in Robbie Capps Memorial Chapel of Blue Ridge Funeral Service. Rev. Stanley Peek will officiate. Burial will follow in Ledford cemetery. Military graveside rites will be conducted by Mars Hill VFW Post #5483.
