DIVINE
SAD ACCIDENT
Kick of Horse Results In Death of Well-known Citizen
Mr. Garfield Divine, who was kicked in the stomach by a stallion Sunday evening at about 5 o'clock, was operated upon Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock, in an effort (to) save his life, but died shortly afterwards without regaining consciousness. Mr. Divine lived on Mr. William Vandivier's farm, on the Mackville pike, one mile from town. He had gone into the barn to water the horse, and in a few minutes his wife heard his cry of distress and hastened into the barn and found her husband in great agony, leaning against the stall. One of the children was sent to notify Mr. Vandivier, who, with other neighbors, soon appeared, and the injured man was taken to the house. He was able to state that the animal had struck him with full force with both feet, but the imprint of only one hoof was discernible on his body. Shortly after this he sank into unconsciousness and remained so until next morning. It was then decided that the only chance to save his life was by operating, and he was removed to Price Hospital, and the operation disclosed that his intestines had been cut in two and his stomach injured to such an extent that recovery was impossible. Just before the anesthetic was administered he said to Mr. J. B. Sims, his father-in-law: "If I die, take care of my wife and little ones." Mr. Devine was about 33 years old. He was a hard-working, substantial citizen, and had many relatives and friends who deeply sympathize with the bereaved wife and the three small children, in the untimely death of the husband and father.
