With 2 young children, Henrietta and Mary Edith, The family headed west on the Oregon Trail about 1878, They lived for awhile in Boulder, Boulder, Colorado where Ethel Amy was born in Apr 1881. They continued westward, stopping at Wells Springs, Morrow, Oregon, which at the time was a big stop over on the Oregon Trail. However, now it is only a historical marker in the middle of the Boardman Bombing Range. Here a son was born, Daniel Edgar in 1885.
In 1886 son Oscar Thomas was born in Hepner, Morrow, Oregon. Thomas purchased a farm which they called Sand Hollow Farm, just outside of Hepner. Daniel died here at the age of 3. Another son Robert Earl was born here in 1891.
It appears that the family moved around a lot and during many years when the census or city directories were published, Thomas is not living in the same location as Marietta. It is possible that he worked as a migrant farmer. He is buried in an unmarked grave in the section of the cemetery for the poor. He may have been in St. Helena to assist with harvesting grapes.
Marietta lived in and around College Place, Walla Walla, Washington for many years. When Thomas passed away in California, she was living either in Washington, or had moved in with her daughter Ethel -- who was living in Portland, Multnomah, Oregon where Marietta passed away.
