Sudanese Statesman. He served as the 1st President of Sudan from November 17, 1958 to November 16, 1964. He also served as the prime minister of Sudan from November 18, 1958 to October 30, 1964. He was educated at Gordon College, and later became a soldier in the British Army, distinguishing himself during World War II. In 1954, he became a general and upon independence in 1956, took charge of the the Sudanese army. Two years later, he overthrew the country's civilian government and became its leader for the next six years before being forced to resign in 1964. He later lived in Britain, before coming back to Sudan, where he passed away.
