HODGDON'S ISLAND -- Charles Stephen (Steve) Hodgdon Sr., 81, of Hodgdon's Island passed away peacefully Saturday, May 23, 2009, at his home with his wife of 57 years by his side.

He was born on Hodgdon's Island, July 28, 1927, the son of Edith Madeline Haines and Philip W. Hodgdon. Graduating in 1945 from Boothbay Harbor High School, Steve was drafted into the Army in October 1945, earning the rank of Staff Sergeant. He served in Japan and was awarded the Asiatic Pacific Theater Medal, Occupation Medal of Japan along with the Good Conduct Medal for his service. He then joined the Naval Reserves in October 1950 and was called to serve in the Korean War with the rank of Petty Officer Third Class.

He was a steady conscientious, hard worker, a jack of all trades and a master of many. He retired in 1993 after 21 years at Bath Iron Works as a pipe fitter. He was a life member of the Bayville Lodge A.F.A.M. He was an avid reader and lived by one motto, "let me live in the house by the side of the road and be a friend to man."

He is predeceased by a son, Charles Stephen (Beaver) Hodgdon Jr.; and a brother, Philip W. Hodgdon.

He is survived by his wife, Florence Brewer Hodgdon, whom he married on May 9, 1952; three daughters, Mary H. and her husband Munro Dodge, Tracey H. and her husband Richard Hyson, Debra H. and her husband Larry Andrews, a son Kevin and his wife Cathy and a daughter-in-law Gale Hodgdon. One of his greatest joys was his 13 grandchildren, Allison Dodge-Williams, Alec Dodge, Evan and Hillary Hyson, C. Stephen III, Caleb and Amy Hodgdon, Ryan, Adam and Taylor Andrews, Brooke Hodgdon-Erwin, Erin and Kacey Hodgdon; two sisters, Virginia Roberts and Deborah Westbrook; a brother-in-law Terry O. Brewer; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

A graveside service will be held Saturday, May 30, at 10 a.m., at Evergreen Cemetery. Sereno Brown will be officiating. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to: The Lincoln County Animal Shelter P.O. Box 7 Edgecomb, Maine 04556 Charles Stephen (Steve) Hodgdon Sr.
