A native of Avery County, she was a daughter of the late Herman and Rosa Lee Thomas Huffman and the wife of Lee Carpenter, who passed away in 2001. She was also preceded in death by a brother, Jewel Huffman and a sister-in-law, Britta Carpenter. Mona was a graduate of Cranberry High School, a homemaker, and a member of Beaver Creek Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday school and was a member of both the choir and WMU.
Surviving are two daughters: Syvana Monroe and husband, Tony, of Gastonia and Michele Lee Tucker and husband, Joe, of Gafney, SC; a step-son, Kenny Carpenter and wife, Louella, of Spruce Pine; two sisters: Mary Huffman of Newland and Arthelia Stafford and husband, Glenn, of Glendale, AZ; six grandchildren: Jason Monroe, Santana Phillips and husband, Justin, Kayla Carpenter, Kenneth "K.C." Carpenter and wife, Shenna; a great-grandson, Braxton Carpenter; two sisters-in-law, Nancy Huffman of Roaring Creek and Joyce Carpenter of Spruce Pine; mother-in-law, Pearl Carpenter of Spruce Pine and a good friend, Gene Murphy. Several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews also survive.
Burial will follow in the Spruce Pine Memorial Cemetery.
