Mary Tillery Bell was the wife of Benjamin Alexander Bell. They were married about 1782 in Orange County, Virginia. Very little is known of her life other than she was Benjamin's wife and they came to Jefferson County by way of Botetourt County, Virginia. Benjamin had been a "Tory" during the American Revolutionary War. Following the British defeat he was not welcome amoung his "Tidewater" neighbors. He and Mary and two of their sons came to Sartin Springs to start a new life. Samuel Bell their oldest son became a wealthy farmer in Jefferson County. Edmond was a some what well known "chairmaker", whose works are still sought after today. We currently do not know the date of her death, but she was laid to rest in the Miller Cemetery which lies across the road from what was their farm. Her marker was made from "fieldstone", and weather has worn away all traces of names and dates.
