A graduate of the Lubbock Sanitorium School of Nursing and then a nurse at the Marine Hospital in New Orleans, Helen was first married to Howell William Slaughter on 26 August 1941 in New Orleans. Following Dr. Slaughter's death, she married widower and long time family friend, Early Bickham Christian Pardue on 11 March 1972.
