J.P. Forsyth of Carthage, Texas has known Lemuel Scruggs for more than 50 years. He first knew him in Panola County about 50 years ago. J.P. Forsyth enlisted in Company F, 10th Texas Cavalry in the Confederate Army on 16 September 1861 at Porter's Bluff in Navarro County. He enlisted in Carthage, Texas. He served until 8 May 1865. He served during the war with Lemuel Scruggs.

Our records show that Lem Scruggs [also known as L. Scruggs but not as Lemuel Scruggs] was a member of Company F, 10th Texas Cavalry, C.S.A. On the roll of the company dated 5 April 1864, last roll on file, he is reported present. No later record found.

Lemuel Scruggs was honorably discharged from the Confederate Army as a Private.
