He is mentioned a few times in "The Civil War Letters of General Robert McAllister" (the commander of the 11th New Jersey), but sadly not in Thomas Marbaker's regimental history of the 11th New Jersey. He is the fourth signature on the 11th New Jersey's stinging rebuke to what was known as the "Peace Resolutions" passed by the New Jersey Legislature in the early spring of 1863. (It was published in the New York Times and can be found on their site.)
In the pre-war period Schenck pursued a business career in Trenton, NJ. He married Hannah Bird, born in Massachusetts, and they had two sons and two daughters. His oldest son, Garret Schenck, went on to found the Great Northern Paper Company.
(Note: I am 95 percent sure that Trenton is Capt. Garret Schenck's birthplace. I am less confident regarding the date, but it is almost certainly 1830 or (less likely) 1831.)
Capt. Garret Schenck was a great-great-grandson of Garret Roelofse Schenck, one of the original Dutch settlers of Monmouth County, NJ.
