Fernando was the son of King Carlos Alberto I of Sardinia and his wife of Maria-Teresa, Archduchess of Austria. He was given the title of 1st Duke of Genoa at birth. He was the founder of the Savoy-Genoa branch of the Savoy family.
On 22 April 1850, he married Princess Elizabeth of Saxony. They were the parents of Maria-Margarita, Queen of Italy, and Tomasso Alberto, 2nd Duke of Genoa.
