Carlos was the son of Prince Carlos Emmanuel of Savoy-Carignano and his wife Princess Maria Christine of Poland.
He succeeded his distant cousin, King Carlos Felice I, as the King of Sardinia.

On 30 September 1817, he married Maria-Teresa, Archduchess of Austria, his second cousin. They were the parents of Fernando, Maria-Cristina, and King Vittorio Emmanuel II, 1st King of Italy.

He abdicated after his forces were defeated by the Austrian army at the Battle of Novara (1849), and died in exile soon thereafter in Portugal.
