Joseph was born in Amsterdam. His parents were Samuel and Mary Sanson. In 1839, he came to America with his widowed mother and his siblings. He first married in Syracuse, New York. After the death of his wife he moved to Philadelphia and married Sarah Voosranger. He was appointed Chief Interpreter for the Courts of Philadelphia.
