Sept. 1, 2012 — After the other photos posted here were taken, someone cut back the overgrowth at part of the Nash plot. Here is the three-stone cluster with Roxy Nash, tallest, holding up leaning stones of Jared Nash, foreground, and broken stone of Charles Nash, at left. (Stone for Baby Esther Nash was still hidden by vines.)

GRUMMUN NASH GROUP 2012: This is what the Nash - Grumman group looked like in August 2012, 10 years after the other group shot. The vines and woods to the east are moving westward and taking over some of the stones, and at least one other has fallen. Most of these people figure prominently in the Diary of Jared Nash at http://RidgefieldHistory.com. 1. Elizabeth Grummun. 2. Charles Grummun. 3. Fallen stone of Henry S. Grummun (was upright 10 years earlier). 4. Base of Charles Nash; whereabouts of rest of stone now unknown, but may be under the vine. 5. In back, stone of Roxy Nash; in front a stone saying Jared Nash, who died in 1870. Another gravestone for him is in Scotts Cemetery (q.v. #41753332). It is not clear where this gravestone came from -- it is 19th Century but not recorded in the Hale index of 1934; Jared was the son of Roxy and Charles Nash. He is also the author of a diary found on http://RidgefieldHistory.com. This stone was not in this spot in 2002 (see other photo). Note that the 2002 photo for this group shows Baby Esther Nash. That stone was not visible in August 2012, perhaps totally hidden by growth or by grown and having fallen over.

NASH GRUMMUN GROUP in February 2002: Even then, it was a sad state of affairs at Charles Nash family plot at Titicus Cemetery — time and vandalism had taken their toll on the gravestones. The site is along the easterly edge of Titicus Cemetery, bordering (and now being encompassed by) a woodland that divides Titicus and Mapleshade Cemeteries. Many of these people can be found in The Diary of Jared Nash, on RidgefieldHistory.com.
1. The stone of Elizabeth R. Grummun (1822-1901), who is often called E.R.G. in the diary. She is a daughter of Charles and Roxy Nash, and sister of diarist Jared Nash. The stone had been knocked off its pedestal and is lying face up on the ground. It's still that way in 2012.
2. The stone of Charles Grummun, who died Aug. 5, 1847. He was Elizabeth's husband, and left her a widow with two small children, one of whom was "Libby," mentioned often in the diary. This stone is barely readable, worn by time and the elements.
3. The small stone of Henry S. Grummun, the one-year-old son of Elizabeth and Charles, who died July 31, 1847, only a few days before his father died. The strain on Elizabeth -- losing a husband and son in a week -- must have been incredible, but she was a strong woman and went on to become a self-sufficient and successful working woman. The stone is mostly unreadable; in 2012, the stone has fallen over and is lying face up. (That's a chihuahua behind the gravestone.)
4. The broken stone of Charles Nash, who died May 22, 1878 at the age of 84. The two pieces are lying against the much-heftier stone of his wife. Charles was the father of diarist Jared Nash. It's not clear whether vandals or a defect in the stone caused the break. In 2012, his stone has been placed in front of hers, but in summer, both are almost entirely covered with overgrowth.
5. The ornate stone of Roxy Nash, wife of Charles and mother of Jared. She died Aug. 20, 1876, two years before her husband, and has a much thicker, fancier -- and probably much more expensive -- stone than Charles. If Charles bought the stone, it may show the love that he had for his wife. However, it may have been purchased by her daughter, Elizabeth Grummun. Roxy was 84 at her death.
6. The most unusual stone, labeled "Baby Esther." What makes it odd is that Esther Nash was hardly a baby -- she was 21 years, 9 months, 16 days old when she died July 19, 1850. She was a daughter of Charles and Roxy, and also has a stone more ornate than that of her father. This stone was not found in 2012, and may be covered with overgrowth.
