My name is Nina Elizabeth {Gunzenhauser} Crain and this is My Story

I was born on February 18, 1910 to adoring parents Christian Gunzenhauser and Nina Katherine Lindsay Gunzenhauser in the home of my parents in Rowley, Homer Township, Buchanan County, IA. I grew to womanhood in Rowley attended and graduated in 1927 from Rowley High School. In 1930 I graduated from Saint Luke's nurses training school in Cedar Rapids, IA and was briefly employed as a live-in nurse for the Robert Armstrong family of Cedar Rapids, IA. Later I received a post-graduate degree in obstetrics from Case Western Reserve University where I was employed as a nurse until 1932. In 1932 I returned to Rowley and was employed as a nurse at Peoples Hospital in Independence, IA.

On July 3, 1937 I was united in marriage with Azotus E. Crain in the home of my mother in Rowley, IA. We lived in Rowley until 1953 when then moved to a farm south of Rowley. I continued to be employed by Peoples Hospital in Independence for over 20 years as a part-time nurse.

I was a life-long member of the Presbyterian Church of Rowley. There I was an ordained elder and played the church piano and organ for over 70 years. In addition I was a 50 year member of Eastern Star of Rowley. I enjoyed playing the piano and organ in my home, being with my friends in the Jolly Deck'Um club and loving and nurturing my precious family.

I passed away on January 14, 2003 at the West Village Care Center in Independence, IA. I am survived by sons Charles Robert (wife Roberta) of Oxford, OH and Richard Azotus (wife JoAnn) of Rowley, IA, three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. I was preceded in death by my parents and one grandson Ryan Crain.
